    Christian Schlegel

    Received the Dipl. El. Ing. ETH degree from the Federal Institute of Technology, Zürich, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering kasinostugan from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN. He currently holds an NSERC Industrial Research Chair at Dalhousie University. From 2002-2012, Dr. Schlegel was iCORE Chair for Digital Communications at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada.

  • Picture of Dmitri Truhachev

    Dmitri Truhachev

    Received a B.S. degree, with distinction, in applied mathematics from Saint Petersburg State Electrotechnical University, Russia, in 1999, and a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Lund University, Lund, Sweden, in 2004. Dr Truhachev is currently an Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Dalhousie University, Canada. Prior to that, he held postdoctoral fellow and research associate positions at the University of Alberta.

    Marcel Jar

    Received his B.Sc. and M.Sc degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil, in 2005 and 2006, respectively. He received a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Alberta in 2011. From September 2011 to October 2012 Marcel was a post-doctoral fellow in the Vodafone Chair at TU Dresden, Germany. Marcel Jar is currently an adjunct Professor at Dalhousie Univeristy and also holds a full-time position at Seneca College of Arts and Technology.

  • Picture of Ulaş Güntürkün

    Ulaş Güntürkün

    Is a principal research scientist at UMDCC, working on the design and development of new generation modems to operate in challenging doubly dispersive propagation environments, building on MIMO-OFDM techniques. He studied his Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada, between 2003 and 2007. Towards the completion of his dissertation, he submitted the results of his Ph.D. research to two journals, and took a leave of absence in good standing status to join the ICTEAM of Université catholique de Louvain (UCL), Belgium, in 2008. Upon the acceptance of his journal articles, he defended his Ph.D. thesis at McMaster in 2010.

    Is a professional DSP/Electronics Engineer (P.Eng.) with 13 years of experience in high technology product development. He has extensive real time embedded systems design and Digital Signal Processing (DSP) experience with applications to motor control and digital communications. At Ultra Electronics Maritime Systems (Ultra), Jean is currently the Technical Project Manager for all underwater acoustic digital communications research activities performed in conjunction with the Ultra Maritime Digital Communications Center (UMDCC) at Dalhousie University.

    Olivier Beslin

    is a Senior Systems Designer at Ultra Electronics Maritime Systems and Adjunct Associate Professor at the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department of Dalhousie University.  During the last 25 years, he worked on Vibration, Acoustics and Digital Signal Processing (DSP).  Over the years, he built his expertise on: Sonar Systems, Digital Signal & Image Processing, Transducer Design, Vibration, Structural Acoustics, Modeling (Piezoelectric, Smart Materials, Sonar and Communications Synthetic Data), Applied Mathematics (Statistics, Decision Theory, Variational Formulations), and Software Development.

    Ali Bassam

    Received his B.Eng in Electrical Engineering from Dalhousie University in 2013. His interest in digital communications led him to join the UMDCC lab and work towards the degree of M.A.Sc. under the supervision of Dr. Christian Schlegel.  His current research interests include high-speed OFDM modem design for underwater acoustic channels, channel estimation, stochastic processes in digital communications and the design of LDPC and turbo codes.

    David McNutt

    Received his B.Sc, M.SC and Phd in Mathematics in 2006, 2008, and 2013 respectively, where an interest in pure mathematics led to the study and partial classification of an important subclass of Lorentzian manifolds - the degenerate Kundt metrics. He is currently working towards a Masters of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering under the supervision of Dr. Dmitry Truhachev.

Mathematics with Engineering Diploma at the University of Prince Edward Island. He has been a research assistant in areas such as Electrochemistry, Fractals and Invariant Measures, and most recently in FPGA development for radio frequency applications in the UDMCC lab.

    Deyasini Majumdar

    A Postdoctoral Fellow at the Ultra Maritime Digital Communications Center at Dalhousie University. Prior to joining Dalhousie, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the High Capacity Digital Communications Labs. at the University of Alberta. She received a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in Electrical Engineering from Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla, India and a M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Calgary. She currently works under the guidance of Dr. Christian Schlegel on Project SMART (led by Dr. Vivian Mushahwar at the University of Alberta) to lead the hardware design efforts at UMDCC on the design of low power implantable wireless telemetry for next-generation body area networks (BANs).
